Tata group company Computational Research Laboratories on Tuesday said it is ready with its supercomputer that is considered as the fourth fastest in the world and the fastest in Asia.

"The cost of development of the supercomputer called EKA has been $ 30 million. It is entirely funded by Tata Sons," CRL Chairman S Ramadorai told reporters.

The world's fourth fastest and Asia's fastest titles have been bestowed on Tata's supercomputer by Top500 Supercomputer list announced recently at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis at Nevada, USA.

CRL was incorporated in February 2006 and its facility is in Pune spread over 4,000 sq ft area.

The company plans to increase its staff strength from 60 to 90 by the fourth quarter of this year.

"About 20 per cent of our staff are PhDs," he said.

Explaining the benefits of a supercomputer, EKA project manager Seetha Ramakrishna said, "To recreate the Hindi film 'Sholay' into an animation film you need a supercomputer."

EKA can be applied in the fields of automotive engineering (cross simulation), drug discovery and nanotechnology, according to a company presentation.

"We have spoken to a wide range of customers (about the usage of the supercomputer)," Ramadorai said. Presently, CRL is working with another Tata group company, Tata Elxi, for animation.

"We are in the process of filing a number of patents for this supercomputer because it is proprietary," he said.
