Hindi Movie Review: Jodha Akbar (2008)

    The Concept
Movie was set to release in October but got postponed to January 2008 but finally released on 15 February 2008. Before release, Jodha Akbar already got several media attention right from kissing scene between Hrithik & Aishwariya to Objection by Rajputs on picturization of their history in the movie. Moreover, people doubt upon Ashutosh Gowarikar for altering the History to suits the movie. It is also said that there are many version of Akbar's this story though it is confirmed that Akbar did marry a Hindu Princess.
Moving on with the concept or plot of the movie, movie is about the Akbar's love which happens to political at first and  surrounded by too much of activities where he had to  win heart of the princess. A tale of love in which couple happened to be emperor of India, also instead of guns and cars in fight.. we have swords and elephant. Do not expect artistic touch of Lagan So a romantic drama of rather a great emperor of India. All bollywood style. The movie is 3 hour 20 minute long.

    The Movie
There are many things to say but lets be breif, Jodha- daughter of King Bharmal of Amer (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), is married to Akbar just for the political reason. Akbar marries her just for the sake of better relationship with Rajputani Alliance. It is not the marriage between Jodha and Akbar, but was marriage between two cultures. Anyhow, at the wedding night, Jodha declines to give conjugal rights to him untill she finds herself attached to him. So it becomes story of Akbar to win heart of this Rajputani princess.  And with series of incidences and nice sequences like Jodha staring at king behind the curtain while he practices with sort shows true genre of human love, these two final units. Not to forget his one-o-one fights with his own brother-in-law. There are various scene like Hrithink Roshan taming an uncontrolled elephant and with trilogies of Rajputs.

    Conclusion
Starting from the subject of movie, do not accept anything historical, it is a movie to entertain, being a Historical movie, it was really a challenging subject for Ashutosh Gowarikar where he had to present a love story of marriage couple out of so much happening around them.  I must say that the presentation of Jodha-Akbar love in such situation is really impressive, though a bit long but appreciable. You can feel the real touch of human nature there.

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwariya Rai Bachchan are both did a nice job in the movie. It is pleasure to watch how both manages to give awesome performance. Illa Arun, as Maham Anga was almost in her best appearance.  There is not much to say apart that movie's casting is nicely taken and everyone has justified their part.

Battle scene were rather confusing for me, you will find hard that who is fighting with whom. One O One fight in the climax is inspired from Troy. Seems so much fury but not able to leave a deep impact. Overall, satisfactory work.

Music of A. R . Rehman is positive aspect of the movie while editing can be better. However other technical aspect like cinematography is appreciable.

Seems, Ashutosh gave considerable effort to balance this movie and he is successful to certain extent but in the end we have a watchable movie. If you are expecting some history then you will find your self daunted else a good movie, a good timepass.

I rate it 3 / 5 rather above average and below good

I saw the movie here last week. I liked the movie. If I have to give the rating, I ll give 3.5 out of 5. And to add, there is no kissing scene in the final movie. Apparenty, the scene was deleted to avoid Bachchan,s fury, which Ash and Hrithik alreday faced on their much hyped Dhoom2 kissing scene.

Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Khulbhushan Karbhanda, Illa Arun, Punam Sinha. Direction: Ashutosh Gowarikar.

    The Story Begins like this:-

The tale is simple Jalaluddin (Hrithik) sees war and bloodshed for his early years and grows up in the midst of war deception, intrigue and hate.  Yet he is a statesman. As part of his diplomatic exercise he agrees to marry a Rajput Princess Jodha (Aishwarya Rai).  Jodha back home is unhappy of her brother Sujammal ( Sonu Sood) not being appointed the heir apparent and Jallaluddin is unhappy with his brother in law Mirza Sarif ud din ( Nikitin Dheer).

Akbar is supported by is aunt Mahan Anga (Ila Arun) who helps him plan and strategise  while his mother  (Punam Sinha) is the understanding person who is there always ..  Initially Jodha refuses to marry Jalaluddin, but later gives in.  she makes certain demands which are accepted by the Emperor in making.  We get to see a few administrative initiatives taken by Akbar and how the two overcome certain hiccups of their relationship built in the context of the times they lived in and the challenges they were required to face.

Most of the cast is adequate but they all suffer from lack of space.  Like in a stage play they come when called upon deliver their lines and leave.  They do not often constitute a continuous part of a narration and this is largely because the film maker picks a few incidents and delves with them rather than take a course and tell what is happening on route.

Despite this and a lot more Ashutosh manages to keep the attention of the viewer and this is a huge task and he must be complimented for this.  Most of the actors perform well.  Special mention be made of Illa Arun a powerful performance with a lot of subtlety, Punam Sinha makes her presence felt. The script however revolves round the principle characters.

Aishwarya as Jodha has a new experimental look- no Kajal and all and sure delivers.  She still is no great performer but the Director gets the best out of her.  As the reigning queen at the b.o. it is understandable that Directors go to her with such great roles.  She is adequate.  She does not over do or disappoint.  Hrithik proves yet again that he can seep into any role and deliver not just with credibility but with amazing sincerity.
