KURBAN: HINDI MOVIE REVIEW

Directed by Rensil D’Silva  Kurban is the story of Avantika( Kareena)  who is a teacher at a university in Delhi. She has come back from New York where she teaches, because her father has suffered a heart attack. Here she meets Ehsaan (Saif) who is a temporary professor and they fall in love. A few months later she gets a call from her university in New York and they ask her to come back. When she breaks this news to Ehsaan, he agrees to go along with her and also to get married to her. After the marriage they leave for New York and set up a home in the Indian neighborhood, where their conservative Muslim neighbours invite them over for dinner. The next morning, Salma [Nauheed Cyrusi], one of the daughter-in-law Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets. Salma pleads her for help as she is in grave danger and in the process pulling along Avantika to in the mess and in danger. Avantika makes a move to find out what is happening and in the process finds out that the conservative family is actually a gang of terrorists and that her husband is a Muslim extremist and only married her to get an entrance ticket in New York and is planning a big attack on the city.

The story is somewhat similar to that of the film “New York” with a few differences here and there. Those who have seen New York will be able to make out the difference. But on the whole “Kurbaan” is a well crafted thriller with its brilliant direction and visibly grand production values. It has its own worth seeing moments along with some superb thought provoking sequences relevant to the current scenario in the western countries. The movie has intensity, is exciting and well executed as a fine thriller with some creditable performances by all the three leading characters. The chemistry between Saif and Kareena is tangible.

Kareena has done a wonderful job as as a helpless girl caught in the wrong place. She looks beautiful throughout and has done justice to her acting. Saif delivers a polished performance and Vivek Oberoi matches them all the way as the reporter. Kiron kher deserves a special mention for her act as the angry muslim lady ready for revenge. The camerawork by Hemant Chaturvedi  is brilliant and music score by Salim Suleiman is up to the standard with ‘Shukhran Allah’ used cleverly in the background

One does wishes that the women could behave differently than the yester year films where the heroin would shout seeing a dead body. You are on a look out for something, in this case Avantika looks for salma and finds her dead body and like a typical heroin screams making ever one aware of her presence. Saif plays the role of a much wanted terrorist and is teaching Islamic studies in a prominent university and draws no attention. Such mistakes should be avoided to enhance the film.

On the whole the story is watchable and has some super performances.

OVERALL RATING : 3.5/5 STARS.

It is a Bit like the movie "newyoyrk" and has few same sequences in them, but some places the acting is very powerful and so are the dialogues. For instance Saif is teaching in the class about Islam and Jihad and peace and Vivek walks in and teh conversation that follows. Very stong retaliation by Vivek Obroi and the truth as well. Because 3000 died and they felt so bad, but how many have been killed by them!!!
See the movie and then tell me.

at first i thought it would be just like any terrorist movie but kurbaan's crisp story-telling and pace compels you to keep watching it.
