Nithari killings was the last straw: Cong

Thursday, 18 January , 2007, 09:08

New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday said the Nithari serial killings of children and women was the "last straw" for the party to withdraw support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh.

The Yadav government had turned into a "liability" for Congress as it had no say in its functioning but still was being targeted for providing outside support to the coalition which had become "unpopular" day by day, AICC General Secretary Ashok Gehlot said.

He told PTI that the serial killings of Nithari was the last straw for the party and it could no longer stop UPCC which was pressing hard for severing ties with the Yadav government.

Gehlot alleged the track record of the SP-led government was not good either on the law and order front or on providing good governance.

He faulted the government for not going in for a common minimum programme, a promise it had made while seeking support of Congress when it came to power.

The decision taken by Uttar Pradesh Congress was the culmination of the uneasy relationship between the two parties which have been constantly at loggerheads since the Yadav government came into power

.....

And the story goes ....

Noida killings PTI

Serial child killer held, skeletons recovered

Noida: The police have recovered a few skeletons of children following the arrest of a man who confessed to killing six children in Noida.
The skeletons were recovered from the house of Satish alias Surinder -- described by the police as a mentally ill man -- in Nithari area in Sector 31 from where more than ten children reportedly went missing in the last one year.

Senior superintendent of police (Noida) R K S Rathore said the man, who was being interrogated, "used to allegedly lure children by offering sweets and toffees and would kill them after sexual abuse."

Of the six children, two were boys and four were girls. Three of them were minors, Rathore said.

Rathore said Surinder confessed during interrogation to having killed six kids. "A larger search operation has been launched. His interrogation is on," he said.

He said bones had been recovered during the search operations.

Police said it unearthed the case of the missing children during the investigation into the kidnapping of a grown-up girl named Payal.

It said that during the course of the investigation, the mobile phone of the missing girl was allegedly found in the possession of the accused.

"He confessed to have kidnapped and killed the girl. On further interrogation, he confessed having kidnapped the children after having lured them with sweets and toffees. He also admitted to have sexually abused his victims," Rathore said.

"All efforts were being made to recover the clothes and other belongings of the victims," the SSP said.

Rathore said police teams had earlier been dispatched to Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai after reports about the missing children had been registered.
